Desktop.ini & Thumbs.db

Desktop.ini :
It is Windows XP system file that stores information about customized folders of your system. If you have customized the display of a folder like changing its icon, its view or anything, Windows has saved those settings in a file named 'Desktop.ini'.

Thumbs.db :
As like Desktop.ini file, it is also a system file which generated automatically by Windows XP when you view the contents of a folder in “Thumbnail” or “Filmstrip” view is known as 'Thumbs'db'. It contains a copy of each of the small preview images generated for image files in that folder so that they load up quickly the next time you browse that folder.
How to get remove Desktop.ini & Thumbs.db?
Mostly people do not like working with these files. They treat these files as virus. I found some tech person also do not know much more about these files. Some of those tech person make fool laymen. So please be careful!

It is easy to remove Desktop.ini & Thumbs.db from your computer.
Go to 'Tools' menu of any folder
Go to 'Folder Options'
Reach to tab named 'View'
Go to 'Advance Settings' option
Where you can get two options (1) Do not cache thumbnails & (2) Hide protected operating system files

Just select above both options

Click on Apply and then Ok

To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following steps

  • Click Start, click Programs, and then click Command Prompt. In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd and then click OK.
  • At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS. Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.
NOTE:=
Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command.

Windows errors related to svchost.exe ?

1)svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs.
2)This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.
3) svchost.exe is a process registered as a backdoor vulnerability which may be installed for malicious purposes by an attacker allowing access to your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data.

4)It is a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

5)It is a process belonging to Microsoft Service Host Process. This could also be a stealth monitoring software that sits in the background and tracks all activities such as keyboard input (including websites visited, passwords etc.) This information can be sent to third parties through email or ftp uploads. If you did not intentionally install this program make sure you remove it to protect your privacy.

Determining whether svchost.exe is a virus or a legitimate Windows process depends on the directory location it executes or runs from

Change the Default Opening Folder in Windows Explorer, xp tip

By default, Windows Explorer opens showing the My Documents folder. To change the default setting so that all top–level drives and folders are shown, follow these steps:

Click Start > Programs > Accessories, then right–click Windows Explorer, and click Properties.

Under Target field, which reads %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe, add to make the line read:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, C:\
Click OK

Add ur own photo in My Computer properties

To do this:
1. Open Notepad.
2. Type the following:[General]Manufacturer="IT KNOWLEDGE CLUB"Model=HP d530 SFF(DC578AV)[Support Information]Line1= Your Ph NoLine2= Your Address.....
3. Save as "oeminfo.ini" in the System32 folder.(Without Quote)
4. Create a bmp file(Your Photo) and save it the System32 folder as "oemlogo.bmp"(Without Quote).
5. Now Check your My Computer Properties.

Change Text on XP Start button.

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open: field. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

In the right pane, double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.

Disable or Remove Shutdown.

It is Possible to Remove Shut Down option from Start menu. Just follow the following steps. Start->Run->gpedit.msc->User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Start Menu &Taskbar->Remove Shutdown on Start Menu.->Enable. Its Done!

Speed Up XP Booting.

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Current
ControlSet\Control\Ses sionManager\MemoryManagement\Prefetch Parameters

Make sure you backup the keys by exporting them to a .reg file.

On the EnablePrefetcher value, change the setting from 3 to 5 (decimal).

Close the registry editor.

Restart your computer.
To perform this hack you will need:
  • A #1 or #2 Phillips-head screwdriver, or (less likely) a T-15 TORX driver or a 1/4" hex nutdriver, to open the case
  • Needle-nosed pliers if you are working with jumpers
  • A small flashlight or headlamp
With tools at hand, perform the following steps:
  1. Turn the PC off (this means a total shutdown, not merely standby or hibernate mode) and disconnect the AC power cord.
  2. Remove the cover from your system (this step may require tools, undoing a thumbscrew, or flipping a latch or two).
  3. Refer to the user manual for the motherboard to find out how to "reset CMOS" memory. You may also find a label for specific jumper or switch settings marked on the system board.
  4. Change the switch setting or jumper position to a specific position or remove the jumper entirely as prescribed in the manual to clear or reset the CMOS memory.
  5. Wait 20-30 seconds for the memory to clear out from lack of power.
  6. After 20-30 seconds put the switch or jumper the way it was before for normal use.
  7. Reconnect the power cord and start up the system to see if the settings have changed to defaults.
  8. Shut the PC down, disconnect the power cord, replace the cover, reconnect the power, and power up the PC.
  9. Enter the BIOS setup program to configure the system as needed. This may include setting the date and time, selecting disk drive parameters, and selecting which devices the system uses to boot up with first.
If your system does not have a "reset CMOS" jumper or switch , the only option is to locate and remove the coin-style battery cell (or on some very old PCs, the battery pack), as shown in , that provides the power to the CMOS memory.

Cracking Windows Logon Password.(Hacking SAM file) Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

SAM File - Holds the user names and password hashes for every account on the local machine, or domain if it is a domain controller.

-What are password Hashes? Actually when we enter password in Windows Logon Tab, Windows encryptsour password using an encryption scheme that turns our password into something that looks like this: 65464564s1d4d2c9a56s42166d55se SAM file can be found under C:(default OS drive) -> WINNT -> System32 -> Config -> SAM. SAM file can be cracked by sing a simple freeware software "SAMInside". Troubleshooting : While copying SAM file it shows an error of "Access Denied" or "File in Use". Actually copying of SAM file is restricted by Windows. There are many alternatives to copy SAM file. [1] You can boot your system by a Live Linux CD such as Knnopix or Fedora. Linux has access to all Windows Files. This way SAM file can be easily copied.

7 tips to Speed Up Your Computer

1) Emptying the Prefetch directory.
Right-click the Start menu -Explorer-clik on Windows directory-->click on prefetch directory and delete everything here. You may emptyng these folder anytime.

2) Emptying the Temp directory regularly.
After a short while, the temp directory filles up with hundreds of temp files that always get scanned over when Windows starts up and when programs launch. This slows everything down immensely. To delete Temp files, make sure no programs are open, First, make sure that you can see hidden folders. Double-click My Computer. Click on the Tools pull-down menu, and then on Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Scroll down and click on Show Hidden Files and Folders. Click Ok. Now you can go to the C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorLocal SettingsTemp folder. Delete everything here.

3) Emptying the Temporary Internet Files regularly.
To empty Temporary Internet Files, go to your Control Panel and double-click the Internet Options icon -> Choose to Delete Cookies, and to Delete Files. This will clear all of your Temporary Internet Files.

4) Check your hard disks for problems.
Double-click My Computer. Right-click the C-drive and click Properties. Click on the Tools tab and choose to check the computer for problems. Click on Check Now. You will then have two check boxes. The top option is for the file check, and the second option is for the hardware (physical disk) check. Check either one, or both. At least check the top one. Hit ok, and reboot. This may take some time, but let it run . Or, you can do a few of the performance tweaks yourself, if you have Windows XP. By default, everything is turned on in Windows XP. It isn't very streamlined for performance, but rather for appearance. You can turn off a few of the unnecessary features, and Windows will still work just fine, and maybe a little faster. To do this, right-click on My Computer and click on Properties. Click on the Advanced tab. Under the Performance section, click on the Settings button. On the Visual Effects tab, you will see a list of check boxes. By default, these are all on. You really don't need any of them for Windows to run. Go through the check boxes one by one, and determine which ones you can and can't live without.

5) Turn off Active Desktop.
Active Desktop turns your desktop into a web page, and allows you to have things like a real-time calendar, and up-to-the-minute weather or stocks. These are nice, but really slow down your computer. And even if you don't use Active Desktop for anything, just having it active can cause a performance decrease. Turn it off. Now, right-click on the desktop and in the pop-up menu, choose Properties. On the Desktop tab, choose Customize Desktop. Now, on the Web tab, make sure that there are no websites chosen here. If there aren̢۪t any, then Active Desktop is not on. Cancel and go back to the desktop.

6) Configure and Streamline MSCONFIG.
One thing that really causes a huge performance decrease is to have unnecessary programs running in the background. Some of these programs can be seen in your System Tray (located next to the clock). These are tiny programs that are robbing you of memory and processing power. Some of them you need, while most you don't. Some of the programs you DON'T need are printer icons, CD burning icons, shortcuts to programs (such as video settings), AOL, any Instant Messaging Programs, etc. Just because these programs aren't always running, doesn't mean that you still can't print, burn CDs or Instant Message. They can all be run from a shortcut.
Or You can use a utility, called MSCONFIG, to turn OFF unnecessary Start Up items.click on Start->Run -> type msconfig. Click on the Startup tab. This is a list of everything that is running in the background, some of which show up in the System Tray. Now, be careful, some of these you do need. Some items to keep are Ctfmon.exe . Others, you can uncheck, such as NeroCheck, ypager, qttask, AOL, and any other Instant Messaging programs, or printing programs. Remember, if something doesn't work, because you turned it off, it can always be turned back on. You just have to reboot every time you make a change here. But, as you uncheck the unnecessary programs that run in the background, you will see that Windows loads much faster, that there are less icons in the System Tray, and that your system is much more quick to respond.
After you reboot, you will have a window that says that the configuration utility was edited. Click check not to show that in the future, a check box at the bottom. This just means that there was a change made to the MSCONFIG.

7) Defragment your hard drives. to efficiently defragment a hard drive, it likes to have 25% free space. It can still do the defragmentation with only 15% free space, but it takes quite a bit longer. If you can, delete any unnecessary files before deframenting your drives. To defragment your hard drives (in any Windows operating system), double-click on My Computer. Right-click on the c-drive and click on Properties. Click on the Tools tab and choose the bottom button, to Defragment Now

Now u wont get the prompt msg to send report 2 microsoft again whenever an error occurs

Have fun with shutdown....

You wanna mess around with your school network?
You wanna own the shit out of some kiddies who think they're the best?
Well thankfully there's the shutdown function in cmd Smile
First of all you need to have access to a cmd prompt on the network for this to work.
If it's disabled you can obviously run everything from .bat files.
So first type in
Code:
Net View
This will give you all the names for all the computers on the network.
Then you want to find a target and write it down, so for example a name is //045-comproom1-05 then you will utilize that name to shutdown the computer.
What next? Well if you're a lil skiddy yourself then the easiest thing to do is type in
Code:
shutdown -i
which will give you a gui interface and you'll be able to shutdown whichever computer you want with it, you can set a time, even throw in a funny comment like "owned" or somethin Smile.
commands you will use if you just wanna use the command interface are
Code:
shutdown -m //computername
- shutsdown the pc.
Code:
shutdown -m -c "owned"
shutdown with a comment.
Code:
shutdown -l
logoff the user.
Code:
shutdown -r
restart the computer.
and so on...
Well that was a nice and quick tutorial now wasn't it?
Have fun, be safe.

Did u know About viruses completely?See here:

Adware:_

Any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen. The justification for adware is that it helps recover programming development cost and helps to hold down the cost for the user.
Adware has been criticized because it usually includes code that tracks a user's personal information and passes it on to third parties, without the user's authorization or knowledge. This practice has been dubbed spyware and has prompted an outcry from computer security and privacy
advocates, including the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

Trojan Horse:-

A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer.
The term comes from the a Greek story of the Trojan War, in which the Greeks give a giant wooden horse to their foes, the Trojans, ostensibly as a peace offering. But after the Trojans drag the horse inside their city walls, Greek soldiers sneak out of the horse's hollow belly and open the city gates, allowing their compatriots to pour in and capture Troy.

Computer Worm:-

A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program, similar to a computer virus. A virus attaches itself to, and becomes part of, another executable program; a worm is self-contained and does not need to be part of another program to propagate itself.
The name 'worm' was taken from The Shockwave Rider, a 1970s science fiction novel by John Brunner. Researchers writing an early paper on experiments in distributed computing noted the similarities between their software and the program described by Brunner and adopted the name.

The first worm to attract wide attention, the Morris worm, was written by Robert Tappan Morris, Jr. at the MIT Artificial intelligence Laboratory. It was released on November 2, 1988, and quickly infected a great many computers on the Internet at the time. It propagated through a number of bugs in BSD Unix and its derivatives. Morris himself was convicted under the US Computer Crime and Abuse Act and received 3 years' probation, community service and a fine in excess of ,000.

In addition to replication, a worm may be designed to do any number of things, such as delete files on a host system or send documents via email. More recent worms may be multi-headed and carry other executables as a payload. However, even in the absence of such a payload, a worm can wreak havoc just with the network traffic generated by its reproduction. Mydoom, for example, caused a noticeable worldwide Internet slowdown at the peak of its spread.

A common payload is for a worm to install a backdoor in the infected computer, as was done by Sobig and Mydoom. These backdoors are used by spam senders for sending junk email or to cloak their website's address.

Backdoor

Display album art in your music folder thumbnails

If your music files are in WMA format, XP automatically picks up the album art and displays it, both in the folder thumbnail as well as in the Windows Media Player display. If your files are in MP3 format, you can download the album art from the Internet and then customize each folder to display it. But this takes a lot of time. A faster way around is to save each image as 'folder.jpg' and put it in the correct folder. Once you do this, XP will pick up that image and use it as the thumbnail for the folder, and also use the image to display in Windows Media Player while playing songs from the album.

Folder Options not available in Tools Menu!???

Many ppl find that in their windows Tools -> Folder Options is not visible, they also can't access it from the Control Panel. I hv seen so many threads for this problem recently in our forum, I searched in forum and found more than 15 threads for this problem.

So I decided to post this tutorial, in this tutorial I'll tell the reasons which can cause this problem and their solutions:

1.) You can enable Folder Options by simply editing the Windows Registry! Just type regedit in RUN dialog box and it'll open Registry Editor, now goto following keys:

Code:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

And in right-side pane, check whether a DWORD value named NoFolderOptions exists or not? If it exists then either change its value to 0 or delete it.

2.) If you are not familiar with Editing the registry, then u can simply download the registry tweak from here and then simply run the file:

www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/folderoptions.reg

3.) But sometimes u can find that regedit is also disabled, when u'll try to open regedit or run the downloaded reg file, u'll get error:

Quote:
Registry Editor has been disabled by administrator.
Its a symptom of "RONTOKBRO" Trojan!

4.) If its not a virus problem and someone disabled Registry Editor in ur system, then u can enable it again by following any of following methods:

a.) Type gpedit.msc in RUN dialog box and goto:

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System

in right-side pane, set "Prevent access to Registry editing tools" to either Not Configured or Disabled.

b.) Just type following in RUN dialog box and press :

Code:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Now after enabling Registry Editor, u can enable Folder Options again by using 1st or 2nd step
